Offering two distance options a 75k ramble around West Mayo or  the 110k route offering up a gravel odyssey to hidden shores, participants can tailor the experience to suit their preferences and fitness.  Exploring the Uncharted: The Way is all about embarking on a journey of discovery. We’re taking you on tracks, trails, and gravel roads that are less travelled, opening up a world of exploration that promises to be both awe-inspiring and challenging.

Ancient Tracks and Local Knowledge: We’ve tapped into ancient tracks and the wisdom of local experts to curate a route that’s not only beautiful but also steeped in history. Prepare to be captivated by the stories and landscapes that these trails reveal. We originally hoped to host three Route Choices but on going issues with property owners has put a halt to proceedings for this year.

 

The Way Gearr: 75-kilometer course provides a glimpse into the exhilarating world of gravel cycling, offering participants a taste of the excitement that comes with tackling unpaved paths. The deliberate inclusion of rough sections adds an element of thrill, creating an animated and engaging adventure. The route cleverly balances the thrill of conquering challenging terrain with the joy of exploring less-travelled back roads

Route information

The Way  75/110k

Location: The Towers bar and restaurant, the Quay, Westport F28V650

Date: Saturday April 20th

Start time: 10am

Terrain: Mix of everything, including hike the bike.

Meters of climbing: 1300m

Feed stations: @40k, 80k & 110k 

Checks: Mandatory checks at designated points

Official finish: 7hours to complete the 110k route and approx. 4.5hrs for the 75k route 

Support: Event organisers will provide some support such as drop bags, serve mechanical help and collection if necessary.

The Way is a non-competitive event that traverses tracks, trails, ancient pathways and roads passing through villages and local communities. The event aims to leave No Trace except tyre marks respecting the Irish environment. Participants are encouraged to pause for meals, bike repairs, or sleep if necessary, provided they resume from where they left off last. The only race is against yourself and the cut off time to be regarded as an official finisher. GPS navigation is the guiding system, there will be no other route markings provided expect for spot checks by officials, strict adherence to Rules of the road and traffic laws are mandatory.
