Q: What is Gravel Grind West?

A: Gravel Grind West is a gravel cycling event hosted by Raceface Events and Marrey Bikes, Ballinrobe. Riders can choose from two route options—approximately 50 km or 100 km—featuring scenic gravel roads on the Lost Treasure trail, river towpaths and the Croagh Patrick heritage trail where historic landmarks, Geo landscapes and a world lost to the beaten-tracks of Mayo’s Lake district.


Q: When and where does it take place?

A: The event takes place on Sunday, August 24, 2025, starting at 10:00 am from Marrey Bikes, Ballinrobe. The finish line is at Johno’s Bar, Cornmarket, Ballinrobe.


Q: What are the course distances and terrain like?

A:

  • 50 km: Ideal for those newer to gravel riding or seeking a more relaxed challenge.
  • 100 km: A tougher route with more gravel sectors and navigation.

The course is complex and best navigated using GPS. GPX files will be sent in the participant briefing email. If you don’t have a GPS device, ride with a buddy who does—it’s easy to get lost.


Q: How much does it cost to register?

A:

  • €40 for the 50 km route
  • €50 for the 100 km route

Online registration is open from February 1 (10:00 am) to August 22 (8:00 pm) via Eventmaster.ie.


Q: Is the route approved and where do I register?

A: Yes, the event is approved by Cycling Ireland, Coillte, Mayo County Council, private landowners, and the Office of Public Works (OPW).

Q: Who are the organisers and sponsors?

A: Organised by Raceface Events, supported by Marrey Bikes, Supermac’s, and Johno’s Bar—with strong backing from the Ballinrobe community.


Q: What can I expect on the route and how long does it take to complete?

A: Expect breathtaking gravel roads near Lough Mask, Lough Carra, historic ruins, quiet woodlands, and pristine countryside.
Estimated times:

  • 100 km: 3.5 – 5.5 hrs
  • 50 km: 2.5 – 4 hrs

Q: When is check-in?

A:

  • Saturday, August 23: 5:00 – 7:00 pm at Marrey Bikes
  • Sunday, August 24: 8:00 – 9:30 am
    Early arrival recommended to collect your number, tech top, and goodies. Merchandise is limited—first come, first served!

Q: What time should I arrive on event day?

A: Be there by 9:30 am to allow time for parking, toilet use, GPS setup, and bike prep.

  • 100 km start: 10:00 am
  • 50 km start: 10:15 am
    ⚠️ Don’t start with the 100 km group if you’re registered for 50 km—the routes differ significantly.

Q: Is this a timed or competitive event?

A: No, this is not a race. It’s a gravel adventure, focused on discovery and enjoyment. We encourage riders to hit the gravel hard, but ease off and take in the historical and scenic highlights.


Q: Are there rest stops or food support?

A:

  • A main food stop at Ballintubber Stores, halfway on the 100 km route and 30 km into the 50 km route.
  • Finish-line burger courtesy of Supermac’s, plus refreshments and music at Johno’s Bar.
  • Medical and mechanical support provided by Mayo Civil Defence, including 4×4 and ambulance cover.

Q: What kind of bike and tyres are recommended?

A: A gravel bike or hardtail MTB with at least 35–40 mm tyres is ideal for comfort and traction on the mixed terrain.


Q: Can I cancel or defer my entry?

A: No refunds or transfers within 3 weeks of the event.


Q: Are there prizes?

A: Yes! Not for the fastest finisher, but for the most creative riders.
Those who join our WhatsApp group and send a photo collage with all of the following:

  • A lake
  • A river
  • A forest
  • A bog plot
  • An abbey
  • A church
  • A period house

…will be entered for prizes. Six prizes are up for grabs.


Q: Is there overnight parking or camping?

A: Yes, three overnight parking locations are available FOC:

  • Western Lakes Cycling Centre (F31 XK09) Camping and toilets available
  • Johno’s Bar Car Park (F31 V585)
  • Rear car park at Marrey Bikes (F31 PD70)
